Red Squirrel & Little Owl Workshop
This workshop gives you the opportunity to spend the day photographing both Red Squirrels and Little Owls across two locations in the Yorkshire Dales and all from the comfort of a hide.
These hides allow photographers to get close encounters and capture a range of static and action shots of both the Red Squirrels and the Little Owls.
The day will start by photographing the Red Squirrels. This location will allow you the opportunity to capture a wide-range of images, whether it’s Red Squirrels on moss covered tree stumps and fallen logs, or attractive pine trees and lichen covered dry stone walls, this setup has you covered. Not forgetting the reflection pool hide, which is my personal favourite.
In addition to the woodland and reflection pool hides you will also get the chance to capture Red Squirrels jumping. Some stunning images can be captured with Squirrels being caught “mid-flight” and I will be there to guide you through the best techniques and settings to use, to enable you to achieve these images.
We will then move onto the Little Owl location and spend the afternoon/evening there. There are currently 3 different perches that the Little Owls use, giving you lots of photo opportunities.
In addition to the owls, there is often Brown Hares in the field, which is always a nice, added bonus.
I welcome all levels of photographers, whether you’ve been doing this for years or never picked up a camera, I would love to see you there. I do not use my own camera when I am running these workshops, so I will be there to offer advice and support when and if it’s required.
Equipment Required
Your favourite DSLR or mirrorless camera.
A focal length of 300mm is ideal for the Red Squirrel location. (I personally use a 100-400mm) and a focal of 300 to 600mm for the Little Owls (600mm will get you very close!).
Tripod is required for both jumping squirrels and Little Owls. The hide rental comes with use of beanbags. However, if you would rather use a gimbal or ball head then each window sill includes a special plate too, where any standard 3/8 inch threaded head (Wimberley included) can be attached.
Warm clothing and waterproof footwear.
Spare cards and batteries.
At a small additional cost I can lend you a Canon 7dmkii and a Canon 100-400mkii lens if you require.
