In this tutorial we will look in depth at your camera and help you to understand your way around it and the menu functions. We will discuss the benefits of shooting in RAW and JPEG, white balance and image stabilisation. We will run through the different camera modes and what settings I have found to be best for my wildlife photography. We will also discuss any specific queries you have regarding your photography equipment.

What is Aperture

I know when I started out in wildlife photography all I wanted to do was blur out the foreground and background of my images, whilst keeping my subject in focus. This tutorial will cover what aperture is and why it is important. We will look at F-stop and why aperture is written as an F-number, depth of field and the aperture scale of your lenses. We will discuss the benefits of understanding aperture in wildlife photography and how it can be used to get creative.

ISO

ISO

There are some common misconceptions when it comes to ISO and in this tutorial we discuss some of those and what ISO is and why it is important. We will also look at the base and common ISO values of your camera, the differences between low and high ISO and when to use these and of course how to change ISO. Although this tutorial is structured to discuss and run through the fundamentals of ISO, each session will be tailored to your specific requirements.

 
Focusing

Focusing

We all want those pin sharp, in focus images and this session is designed to help with exactly that. Perhaps you want to photograph birds in flight and you’re not sure where to start, well in this tutorial we will discuss what focusing is, why it is important and how/where best to focus when photographing wildlife. We will look at the differences between manual focus and auto focus, and between shutter and back button focusing. We will also run through the various focus modes such as continuous vs single servo autofocus and focus points. Although this tutorial is structured to discuss and run through the fundamentals of focusing, each session will be tailored to your specific requirements.

Getting the right shutter speed can be crucial in capturing sharp, in focus images but it doesn’t have to be complicated. In this tutorial we will look at what shutter speed is, why it is important and how shutter speeds can be used in different ways to capture creative images in wildlife photography. We will discuss how best to hold your camera and the tips I use when pressing the shutter button to ensure I capture sharp images. This may sound simple but it’s amazing how a few tips and tweaks can make the world of difference. We will also go through how to change your shutter speed and the differences between fast and long exposures.

When it comes to photography I’m a firm believer that there is no right or wrong and there are certainly exceptions to the ‘photography rules’ however there are some very simple things you can do to increase the quality of your images, like framing the ideal composition. In this tutorial we will discuss what composition is and why it is important. We will look at the rule of thirds, negative space and how to create simplicity and balance. Although this tutorial is structured to discuss and run through the fundamentals of composition, each session will be tailored to your specific requirements.
